Terms of service

SplitSmart is a private app for splitting household expenses, run by Freegrove Consulting Limited for a single household. These terms cover using it. They are short because the arrangement is simple: it is free, it is invite-only, and it is provided as a private arrangement rather than as a commercial service.
Using the app
Access is by invitation. Signing in with a Google account is necessary but not sufficient: your email address has to match an invitation or an existing membership. There is no open registration.
By using the app you accept these terms. If you do not, do not use it.
What the app does
It records expenses the household enters or imports, works out how they split, and shows who owes whom. It keeps a history so mistakes can be undone.
What the app does not do
It does not move money. No payments, no bank connections, no card details. The balances it shows are a record of what you have told it, not an instruction to anyone's bank. Settling up happens between you by whatever means you already use, and you record it in the app afterwards.
It does not decide who owes what. The figures come from what the household enters, and the app is only as right as its inputs. If two people disagree about a balance, that is a conversation between them. The app has no view on it and Freegrove Consulting Limited is not an arbitrator.
It is not financial, tax or accounting advice, and it is not built to produce records for anyone official.
Your responsibilities
- Keep your Google account, or your password, secure. Anyone who can sign in as you can see and change the shared ledger.
- Enter things honestly. Other people are relying on the figures.
- Only upload statements and receipts that are yours to upload.
- Do not try to reach another member's private inbox, or to get at parts of the server you have not been given.
Availability
The app runs on a single server that one person maintains in their spare time. It may be slow, unavailable, restarted without warning, or taken down permanently. There is no uptime commitment and no support obligation. Keep your own record of anything you would mind losing.
Your data
The privacy policy covers what is held and who sees it. In short: it stays on the server, the operator can read it, and nothing is sold.
You can export the shared ledger at any time. If you want your data deleted, ask info@freegrove.co.uk, and read the deletion section of the privacy policy first, because removing shared expenses also changes what the other household member sees.
Ending access
You can stop using the app whenever you like and ask for your account to be removed. Access may be withdrawn if you break these terms, or simply because the household arrangement has changed or the app is being retired. Reasonable notice will be given where possible, along with an export of the ledger.
No warranty
The app is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. It might contain bugs that produce wrong figures. Check anything that matters before acting on it.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, Freegrove Consulting Limited is not liable for any loss arising from using the app, including lost or incorrect data and disputes between household members about money.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.
The software
The SplitSmart source code is published under the MIT licence and you are welcome to read, copy and run your own instance of it. These terms are about this particular instance, not about the code.
Changes
These terms may change. If they change in a way that matters you will be told in the app before the change takes effect. Continuing to use the app after that means you accept the new terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
